Hydrogen UK Brings Industry and Government Together for Inaugural Investment Forum

This week, as a partner of Hydrogen UK and in conjunction with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial strategy (BEIS), Madano organised the first-ever UK Hydrogen Investment Forum. This event brought business leaders, policy experts and investors together for an engaging and exciting discussion on the development of hydrogen across the entire value chain. It had over 150 people in attendance including Greg Hands, Minister of Energy and Kwasi Kwarteng, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy who delivered the keynote speech and participated in an insightful panel discussion with experts from across the hydrogen industry. The panel also included the UK’s newly appointed Hydrogen Champion Jane Toogood and other industry experts.

The objective of the event was to provide a forum that would create real momentum and collaboration between the public and private sectors, which is crucial for the continued rapid growth of the hydrogen industry. Bringing together stakeholders from across the hydrogen sector where investors and policy experts facilitated conversation, drove collaboration and gave investors access to key players in the hydrogen value chain. The Secretary of State and Minister Hands’ contributions signalled the government’s intention to actively support and work alongside the private sector to develop the industry.

“The UK’s hydrogen sector is open for business. With the right investment, we can unlock the enormous potential of hydrogen by reindustrialising our economy and ending our dependency on expensive fossil fuels.”

Kwasi Kwarteng, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy

A new round of funding was announced which reaffirmed the government’s vision for the UK to be a global leader in hydrogen. Minister Hands announced the opening of a joint allocation round of funding for electrolytic hydrogen projects. Kwasi Kwarteng announced the appointment of Jane Toogood, Chief Executive of Catalyst Technologies at Johnson Matthey, as the UK’s first Hydrogen Champion. In her role, Jane will ensure industry and government collaboration to realise the UK’s hydrogen ambitions.

As well as the keynote speeches and panel discussion, we gave business leaders the opportunity for in-depth discussions with knowledgeable policy experts from BEIS, Department for Transport and Department for International Trade. This added depth to the event and allowed attendees to ask targeted questions specific to the sector of the hydrogen economy they were most interested in.

Madano believe events such as these are important for accelerating the net zero transition because they bring together key decision makers in government and industry, which is why representative associations, like Hydrogen UK, are so important. The organisation is the largest hydrogen trade association in the UK, and it is continuing to grow; enabling companies big and small to be heard by the government.
